Man, 96, mauled by dogs in back yard, dies

KATY, Texas, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Police near Houston said neighborhood dogs likely mauled a 96-year-old man, killing him and his pet Chihuahua in his back yard.

Relatives identified the victim as Juan Campos of Katy, Texas.

Campos' grandson, Miguel Velasquez, said he came to his grandfather's home Friday and heard the loud sound of multiple dogs barking. He went into his grandfather's backyard and found him laying on the ground unconscious with bite marks on his legs, his beloved pet Chihuahua, Chloe, beside him.

Both were dead, the Houston Chronicle reported.

"I called him many times, hoping he would respond," Velasquez said. "But, he didn't."

Velasquez said he believes the dogs responsible live at the home behind his grandfather's house. The fence separating the two yards is in disrepair and the dogs, which Velasquez said have been aggressive in the past, could have entered Campos' yard.

Police searched the area and rounded up a half-dozen canines, at least one of which had blood on its fur, officers said.

No charges have been filed.
