DENVER, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Denver City Council has adopted rules on the sale of recreational marijuana, in advance of the legal sale of non-medical marijuana beginning in January.
The council agreed Monday on a 3.5 percent tax rate, allowing retail stores to sell both medical and non-medical marijuana at the same facility without physical barriers between the merchandise.
It called for mandatory public hearings before medical marijuana centers can be converted to retail sales outlets, The Denver Post reported Tuesday.
"The whole country is watching is," said Council President Mary Beth Susman. "Come January 1, we are going to have people from all over the country asking us how it is going. We have thought about what it will mean for the future."
Denver has 200 medical marijuana centers and is the largest city in Colorado to opt-in on allowing the sale of retail marijuana, the newspaper said.
