Man asks babysitter for time to hide gun after shooting boy in head

NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A New York man has been ordered held on $75,000 after he allegedly shot a toddler in the head, police say.

Akeem Bernard told the boy's babysitter not to call 911 right away so he would have time to hide the gun, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.

Investigators said Bernard, 22, was with the babysitter at the 3-year-old's apartment in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn at the time of the apparent accident.

Bernard, who lived in the same building, had been intoxicated all day, when the boy, Tharell Edward, was shot, police said.

He hid the weapon, a semi-automatic pistol, in a shoebox near the boy's head, police said.
