At 5 p.m. EDT, Ivo was about 265 miles west of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and was sporting sustained winds of 40 mph. The storm center was headed north-northwest at 12 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

The center said people in the Baja California Peninsula should still monitor Ivo's progress.

Ivo was expected to produce a total of one to three inches of rain in the southern and central portions of the penisula.

Life-threatening surf and rip conditions also are expected along the coast.
