MOORVILLE, N.C., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- At least 27 U.S. Army reservists were injured when a bus they were riding in overturned Friday near Mooresville, N.C., police said.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the bus was carrying members of the Army Reserve from 991st Transportation Company based in Salisbury, N.C., when it overturned on Highway 150/152, WSOC-TV, Charlotte, reported.
There were conflicting reports on how the crash occurred about 3 p.m. EDT. One report said the bus driver slowed to make a turn but the bus slid and ran off the road, while another said the driver was trying to avoid hitting a vehicle turning in front of the bus.
A member of the unit told WCNC-TV, Charlotte, N.C., the reservists were returning to the U.S. Army Reserve Training Center in Salisbury, from a training session at Fort McCoy, Wis. They had boarded the Holiday Tours charter bus at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Four of the injured were taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital, seven to Lake Norman Regional Hospital and 15 were taken by MEDIC bus to Carolinas Medical Center, WSOC-TV said.
One soldier was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of what were described as serious but non-life-threatening injuries, WCNC-TV said.
Reservists who were not taken to hospitals were driven by bus to Salisbury, where they were met by family members, WSOC-TV said.
