Baby gorilla makes first public appearance since injury

CHICAGO, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Baby gorilla Nayembi is set to make her first public appearance at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago since she was injured earlier this year, officials said.

Nayembi, who was born in November, suffered a severe facial cut while momentarily out of view at the zoo in February, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The baby gorilla underwent emergency surgery and has been under round-the-clock care since then, Lincoln Park Zoo spokeswoman Sharon Dewar said.

She was reunited with her mother, Rollie, and another baby gorilla about a month ago, and her father, Kwan, Wednesday, Dewar said.

Now, "we're ready for the next step," Dewar said.

Zoo visitors will be able to see Nayembi starting at 1 p.m. Thursday.

"It's really exciting," Dewar said.
