Father charged with providing son with gun used in alleged killings

KISSIMMEE, Fla., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A Florida father has been arrested for providing his son with a .45-caliber gun that the 15-year-old then allegedly used to kill two victims, police said.

Kissimmee police said Lothar Schafer allowed his son, Konrad, access to the gun even after he discovered the teen was sneaking out of the house to go shooting.

Lothar Schafer allegedly took the boy to the gun shop where he bought the weapon a day before a series of shootings began in June and July across the county, the Orlando Sentinel said.

"The rifle was used in multiple shooting incidents in Osceola County ... including in the shooting death of 17-year-old David Guerrero," police said in a statement.

The father also told police he bought 100 rounds of ammunition because his son told him he was having problems with some peers, records state.

Lothar Schafer faces a felony charge of culpable negligence for allegedly leaving a loaded firearm within easy access of a minor who uses it to injure or kill someone, police said.

Konrad Schafer is being tried as an adult for allegedly killing Guerrero and Eric Roopnarine, 22.
