AirTran flight diverted to Memphis after man tries to open exit door

MEMPHIS, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Police in Memphis arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to open an emergency exit door on an AirTran flight from Baltimore to Austin, officials said.

"AirTran flight 265 from [Baltimore to Austin] safely diverted to [Memphis] this evening," said Southwest Airlines spokesman Brad Hawkins in an email Monday. "I also understand there was an unruly customer among the 120 on board," and five crew members.

The passengers on board the flight deplaned once in Memphis so they could be interviewed about the incident and the aircraft could be checked, said John Greaud, Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority's vice president of operations.

Greaud said the man wasn't unruly and didn't appear to be intoxicated. Responding officers agreed with that assessment, WREG-TV, Memphis, reported Monday.

The flight resumed at about 8:30 p.m., local time. So far, charges haven't been filed.
