Planned Parenthood affiliates get Obamacare funding

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Three state-based Planned Parenthood affiliates will get funds to help consumers sift through insurance options under the Affordable Care Act, officials said.

The grants totaling about $655,000 from the federal government were announced Thursday as the Obama administration tries to educate the public before open enrollment begins for the act's insurance exchanges, The Hill reported.

Planned Parenthood affiliates based in Iowa, Montana and New Hampshire received the awards, along with disease organizations, universities and Catholic health agencies.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services allocated $67 million in grants Thursday, with $13 million more expected, The Hill said. The money is intended to help people to understand the new insurance marketplaces.

The Hill said the grants probably will not be popular among Republicans, who object to Planned Parenthood because some of its clinics provide abortions.
