NEW YORK, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner said in his first campaign ad debuting Monday "powerful voices" are trying to expel him from the race for New York City mayor.

"Look, powerful voices have made it clear from the very beginning that they didn't want me to win," the Democratic candidate says in the 30-second television ad. "But this isn't about what they want. They've gotten their way for far too long."

"If you give me the chance, I will fight for you and your family every single day," Weiner adds.

The clip doesn't mention the sexting scandal for which Weiner has come under fire, Politico reported Monday. Fellow Democrats have urged the former congressman to step down from the race.

Weiner spent $500,000 on the advertisement, The Hill reported.

A New York Times/Siena College poll released Thursday found Weiner is in fourth place in the race with 10 percent support from Democratic primary voters. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is the frontrunner with 26 percent support.
