U.S. Rep. Peter King says he's serious about presidential bid

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said he's seriously considering a presidential bid if he feels he has enough support.

King told The Hill he's headed to New Hampshire to meet with voters and gauge how much support he can receive.

"I'm serious about looking at it and we'll see where it goes from there," he said. "I have no intention of being there just for the sake of being there, so if I think there's any real chance and support, then we'll move forward."

He said he won't make a decision on the matter, though, before early 2015.

Some Republican insiders wonder how serious King is about a possible bid because he has yet to hire any campaign staff, conduct any polling or reach out to major donors, The Hill reported.

"The congressman is a classic definition of a long-shot primary candidate up here if he decides to run, there's no question about that," said Jim Merrill, who led Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in New Hampshire. "That's not to say that he can't contribute meaningfully to the debate but it'll certainly be a challenge for him."
