SAN DIEGO, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Authorities in Idaho said Saturday a teenage California girl kidnapped by a murder suspect was found safe and her alleged abductor had been killed.
The Los Angeles Times reported San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said in San Diego that James Lee DiMaggio, 40, was fatally shot by FBI agents in the Idaho wilderness Saturday.
Hannah Anderson, 16, "appears to be in pretty good shape" and would be "thoroughly evaluated" at a hospital before being interviewed by investigators, Gore said.
"Obviously we would have liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in a court of law, but that was not the case," Gore said.

The Times' sources said DiMaggio was killed not far from the remote Idaho location where horseback riders had seen him and the girl, who was abducted from her San Diego County community Sunday, earlier in the week.
California officials had said earlier Saturday a body found in DiMaggio's burned-out house has been identified as the teen's 8-year-old brother, Ethan Anderson, CNN reported.
Ethan's remains had been found with those of his mother, Christina Anderson, in DiMaggio's house in San Diego County, but the condition of his body delayed identification.
DiMaggio is believed to have killed them and kidnapped Hannah Anderson. A long-time friend of the Anderson family, DiMaggio was reported to have had romantic feelings for the girl.
An Amber Alert was issued for the teenager, initiating a nationwide manhunt for DiMaggio.
Authorities focused their attentions on Idaho after a horseback rider reported he had a conversation Wednesday with two people matching their descriptions.
The rider left the area "believing they were camping in the area," said Andrea Dearden, a spokeswoman for the Ada County Sheriff's Office.
The rider described the encounter as "odd but nothing as alarming," Dearden said, but did not learn of the manhunt until that evening.
DiMaggio's car was found Friday hidden by brush in the River of No Return Wilderness area about 15 miles outside of Cascade, Idaho.
