Poll: Chris Christie leads in re-election race for New Jersey governor

HAMDEN, Conn., Aug. 8 (UPI) -- New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie has the lead in his bid for reelection by a 58 to 30 percent margin over his democratic challenger, a poll indicates.

Voters in urban, Democratic areas are divided, with 43 percent for state Sen. Barbara Buono and 42 percent for Christie, the Quinnipiac Poll found, but the Republican incumbent has leads in every other area of the state.

Buono leads among Democrats with 57 percent for her, but 30 percent of Democrats still favor Christie.

Meanwhile, Christie leads by a 91 to 4 percent margin among Republicans, and a 66 to 22 percent margin among independent voters.

"The big election is still the race between Gov. Christopher Christie and state Sen. Barbara Buono and the governor's 2-1 lead remains undented after months of polling," Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,042 New Jersey voters on land line and cell phones between Aug. 1 and Aug. 5.

The poll's margin of error was plus or minus or minus 2.2 percent.
