Bulger jury told to try to reach decision on each racketeering charge

BOSTON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The jury in Boston's James "Whitey" Bulger trial was told Thursday to attempt to reach a verdict on each racketeering charge, including those of six murders.

Bulger, 83, is charged in a broad 32-count indictment that includes a racketeering charge that includes 33 criminal acts including the murders, six acts of extortion and conspiracy to sell drugs, the Boston Globe reported.

The 12-person jury, in its third day of deliberations after a seven-week trial, sought advice Wednesday, asking Judge Denise Casper if they needed to be unanimous in deciding the government did not prove its case for any single racketeering act, WBZ-TV reported.

They were told to be unanimous in any decision, but to leave the count of guilty or not guilty votes blank if they could not decide, CBS News said.

The judge clarified the instruction Thursday morning, telling jurors of their duty to "attempt to reach agreement on each of the racketeering charges."

They were advised Wednesday, CBS News said, they needed to find Bulger guilty on only two of the 33 acts covered in the racketeering charge to find him guilty of racketeering.
