SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Yahoo! Inc. is changing its iconic logo to reflect shifts at the Web portal and search engine since Marissa Mayer took control, the U.S. company said Wednesday.

The new logo is to be unveiled at midnight EDT Sept. 5, Chief Marketing Officer Kathy Savitt said in a blog post on the Tumblr microblogging and social networking website Yahoo! bought for $1.1 billion in May.

But before unveiling the final product in 30 days, the company will display 29 alternative logos, one every day, Savitt said.

"Over the past year, there's been a renewed sense of purpose and progress at Yahoo!, and we want everything we do to reflect this spirit of innovation," she said in her blog.

Yahoo! -- under President and Chief Executive Officer Mayer -- gave a face lift to its Flickr image and video hosting website, redesigned its email service and fine-tuned its fantasy sports simulator, among a variety of changes in addition to buying Tumblr.

In February, Mayer, who joined Yahoo! in July 2012 after being a top Google Inc. executive, also oversaw a controversial personnel policy change that required all remote-working employees convert to in-office roles.

"While the company is rapidly evolving, our logo -- the essence of our brand -- should too," Savitt said in her blog post.

The new logo will still be purple, retain its exclamation point and be accompanied by the company's signature yodel, Savitt said.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., Web pioneer wants to "preserve the character that is unique to Yahoo! -- fun, vibrant, and welcoming," she said.

The alternative logos will appear on the Yahoo! website, Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter, she said.
