CLEVELAND, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Utility workers have cut the power to the Cleveland house where three women were held hostage for up to 10 years, officials said.
The home in which Ariel Castro held Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight is to be torn down Wednesday, The Plain Dealer reported Tuesday.
The Cuyahoga Land Bank acquired the property last week, said bank President Gus Frangos, adding the contractor is demolishing the home at no cost, the Cleveland newspaper said.
City Councilman Brian Cummins said he was working with the bank, police, prosecutors and local development corporations to redevelop the property.
"We're trying to be very thoughtful as to what goes in there," he said.
Cummins said he wasn't yet able to reveal details about the plan.
Before power was turned off, family and friends were allowed to remove items from the home that remained after investigators took evidence.
An officer said Berry took photos of the daughter she gave birth to after being raped by Castro.
Castro was sentenced last month to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, after he pleaded guilty to hundreds of counts of rape and kidnapping, as well as two counts of aggravated murder.
