CNN: Charges brought in N.Y. against Libyan in Benghazi attack

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Federal charges have been filed against a Libyan militia leader in the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, CNN reported Tuesday.

The news network said sources it identified as people briefed on the investigation revealed the charges filed in New York against Ahmed Abu Khattalah. The charges, still sealed, are the first criminal prosecution to arise out of the investigation into the Sept. 11, 2012, attack that claimed the lives of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other diplomatic employees.

With frustration growing over the lack of apparent success in tracking down those responsible for the assault, people close to the case told CNN said there has been significant progress in recent months.

The network said the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI declined to comment, and added its sources would not provide details of the counts against Khattalah.
