Rescues under way in northern Georgia after rain, flooding

ELLIJAY, Ga., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A flash flood after 6 inches of rain in Gilmer County, Ga., north of Atlanta, led to numerous rescues of trapped residents Thursday, authorities said.

The rainfall prompted flash flood warnings for Cherokee, Forsyth, Dawson, Pickens and Gilmer counties, where 4- to 6 inches of rain fell overnight, WSB-TV, Atlanta, said. Dry weather was predicted for Friday and Saturday.

At least one farm pond dam failed, adding additional water to the Cartecay River in East Ellijay, Ga., which, the National Weather Service said, crested 2- to 3 feet higher than normal Thursday.

Gilmer County police reported impassable bridges, a tree and power line falling on a police vehicle and numerous swift-water rescues of residents.

Cobb County police sent a swift-water boat and rescue team to Gilmer County, as did Forsyth County police for Pickens County, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.

There were no reports of deaths or injuries.
