Man allegedly used dying man's ATM card, then called 911

GAINESVILLE, Fla., July 31 (UPI) -- Police say a Gainesville, Fla., apartment maintenance man allegedly found a tenant dead or dying and withdrew money from the man's bank account.

Clarence Davis, 52, called authorities July 1 to report the death of tenant J. W. White. Emergency medical personnel pronounced White dead of an undisclosed medical condition, police said.

On July 22, White's brother contacted police to report ATM transactions of $600, plus fees, on the dead man's bank account, which took place at an ATM across the street from the apartment and occurred eight minutes before the man was found dead, the Gainesville, Fla., Sun reported Wednesday.

Video surveillance footage from the ATM show Davis conducting a balance inquiry, then making two withdrawals from the victim's account, police said, noting Davis made a 911 call after he returned from the ATM.

In a police interview Monday, Davis said he had consent to remove the money from white's account to pay rent and other bills. Davis then admitted to keeping the victim's money.

Police spokesman Ben Tobias said Davis ran errands for White, and knew the victim's PIN number. Davis was charged with grand theft and jailed.
