OSHKOSH, Wis., July 31 (UPI) -- A namesake and distant relative announced Wednesday she plans a do-over of pioneering U.S. aviator Amelia Earhart's last flight.
Amelia Rose Earhart, 30, a traffic reporter for KUSA-TV in Denver, made the announcement at the EAA AirVenture flight show in Oshkosh, Wis., KUSA reported.
"One year from now I will be completing, symbolically completing, and recreating Amelia Earhart's historic flight around the world," Earhart said. "It's a dream that I've had since I was about 18 years old."
Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan -- who took off from Oakland, Calif., in 1937, flew to Miami and then kept heading east -- were last seen when they took off from Lae, New Guinea, on July 2. The last radio communications came as they approached Howland Island about 800 miles to the east.
Earhart plans to retrace her distant relative's journey as exactly as possible. But she will be flying a Pilatus PC-12 NG with up-to-date equipment.
She will be accompanied by a co-pilot, Patrick Carter.
Earhart is a flying enthusiast who has started a foundation in Denver to help girls train as pilots. She hopes to use next year's flight to raise money for the foundation.
