Michigan attorney general says he wants to protect Detroit pensions

LANSING, Mich., July 27 (UPI) -- Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said Saturday he will intervene in the Detroit bankruptcy case to protect people collecting city pensions.

Schuette will ask a bankruptcy judge Monday for permission to appear in the case, The Detroit News reported. But he said he will also continue to represent Gov. Rick Snyder, who named Emergency Manager Kevin Orr, the Washington bankruptcy lawyer who filed for Chapter 9 protection.

Orr has said the city's $18.5 billion in liabilities includes $3.5 billion in unfunded pension obligations.

Schuette said in a statement that the Michigan Constitution protections pensions, saying they cannot be "diminished or impaired," the Detroit Free Press reported.

"The city of Detroit's bankruptcy will cause even greater hardship for many people in southeast Michigan who are already struggling," Schuette said.
