DETROIT, July 26 (UPI) -- A federal judge has announced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be sentenced in September for public corruption.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said Thursday Kilpatrick will be sentenced Sept. 3, The Detroit News reported.
Bobby Ferguson, a city contractor and longtime friend of Kilpatrick, will be sentenced Sept. 4, and the former mayor's father, Bernard, is to be sentenced Sept. 10.
Prosecutors plan to ask for a lengthy prison term for Kilpatrick, who could face 20 years, the Detroit Free Press said.
Ferguson was found guilty of bribery, racketeering and extortion while Bernard Kilpatrick was convicted of one tax charge with the jury unable to reach a verdict on whether he was guilty of racketeering.
Victor Mercado, former head of the Detroit water department, pleaded guilty during the trial and faces as much as 18 months in prison and a $100,000 fine.
