WASHINGTON, July 26 (UPI) -- The Carnival cruise ship Triumph failed its first safety inspection after repairs were made following a June fire, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
In prepared and verbal testimony Thursday before the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Joseph Servidio said inspectors found serious deficiencies relating to fire detection and lifeboat drills aboard the ship after $115 million in repairs were completed.
The ship was poised to return to service four months after an engine room fire left it disabled in the Gulf of Mexico, NBC News reported.
After corrections were made at the Galveston, Texas, repair base, the "Coast Guard approved the vessel to sail on June 13, passengers boarded the ship on schedule and the vessel sailed at its scheduled departure time," Carnival spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz said.
