When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the boy with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Investigators initially said they believed the boy accidentally shot himself, but later said the medical examiner's office was able to determine the gunshot wound on the boy was not self-inflicted, Chief Doug Wood said.

The investigation is now being treated as a homicide, Wood said.

Police are now looking for Trevor Braymiller, 25, who is a dating the boy's mother.

Braymiller allegedly fled from the scene of the shooting before police arrived.

Meanwhile, police have recovered the gun used in the shooting at a church Braymiller allegedly stopped at after leaving the scene of the shooting, the Mount Vernon Skagit Valley Herald reported.

Investigators learned that Braymiller stopped at the church from a friend of his who then drove him to Big Lake, Sedro-Woolley Police Lt. Lin Tucker said.

Police do not yet know whether Braymiller, who is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess firearms, owned the gun involved in the shooting, Tucker said.

The boy's mother, another young man and a couple were at the house at the time of the shooting, Tucker said.
