UNITED NATIONS, July 18 (UPI) -- A United Nations Director-General condemned the killing of Honduran journalist and broadcaster Anibal Barrow, the 20th journalist killed there since 2010.
Irina Bokova, chief of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Thursday said in a statement, "I condemn this killing. Letting crimes against journalists go unpunished seriously undermines press freedom."
Barrow, former host of a popular morning talk show on Globo TV, was kidnapped June 24 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. His body was found July 11.
Pointing out the crime "undermines freedom of expression in Honduras and journalists' ability to exercise their profession," the statement noted Barrow was the 20th journalist to be assassinated in the Central American country since 2010.
Government power in Honduras was transferred in 2009 from the president to the head of Congress, a move widely seen in the international community as a coup d'état.
