Sandusky scandal costs Penn State nearly $47 million

BELLEFONTE, Pa., July 18 (UPI) -- Penn State officials said Thursday the Jerry Sandusky scandal has cost the university nearly $47 million.

The university has received invoices from more than 36 lawyers, consultants and others for work from November 2011 through April 30, totaling $46,854,256, the State College Centre Daily Times reported.

The total cost of the scandal could reach $154.8 million after the university receives invoices from the 30 or so men who claim they were sexually abused by Sandusky and the full NCAA fine, the news report said.

Meanwhile, Sandusky's adopted son has submitted documents to a Pennsylvania court requesting a name change for himself and his family.

The petition, filed in Centre County, is sealed so details about why Matt Sandusky, his wife and four children want to change their names are unavailable, CNN reported Wednesday.

Sandusky is one of six adopted children of Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant coach convicted last year of sexually abusing 10 boys during a 15-year period. He is serving more than 30 years in prison.

At first, Matt Sandusky denied being abused by his adoptive father. During jury deliberations, however, he admitted to his attorney he was abused by Jerry Sandusky as well.

In a 2012 interview with police, Matt Sandusky said the reason he came forward was so his family "can really have closure and see what the truth actually is."
