SALT LAKE CITY, July 16 (UPI) -- A young peregrine falcon that captured attention after hatching atop a Salt Lake City landmark died days after flying into a skyscraper, wildlife officials say.
The fledgling, named Solo after he was the only one of four eggs to hatch in a nest on the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, smashed into the Zion Bank Tower, a glass-sheathed skyscraper, on July 3. Wildlife workers found Solo and took him to a rehabilitation center where he died Saturday, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Glass buildings present a hazard for birds living in urban areas, Bob Walters, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources watchable wildlife coordinator, told the newspaper.
"There are losses from crashing in the wild, but glass presents them with a unique challenge," he said. "Maybe they can't see the glass and are looking through it. Or maybe they see reflections and think they are safe."
Webcams had provided thousands of bird enthusiasts the opportunity to peek in on the nest and watch young Solo feed and eventually begin learning to fly.
