MANCHESTER, N.H., July 16 (UPI) -- A New Hampshire woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of lying about her role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, officials say.
Lawyers for Beatrice Munyenyezi, of Manchester, had attempted to convince jurors that witnesses had been pressured to lie that she had identified Tutsi to be killed or raped, the Concord Monitor reported Monday.
In sentencing Munyenyezi, U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe said he had "bent over backwards" to let her attorneys make their case, adding that he had "strived mightily" not be believe she had committed the offenses with which she was charged.
However, he said, "The facts are unavoidable."
McAuliffe also stripped Munyenyezi of her citizenship. She had applied in 1995 to come to the United States as a refugee and became a naturalized citizen in 2003.
