WASHINGTON, July 16 (UPI) -- Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Hospital is the No. 1 U.S. medical facility for people with life-threatening and rare conditions, U.S. News & World Report said.
In the magazine's 2013 rankings released Tuesday Johns Hopkins reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the magazine's honor roll after losing it to Massachusetts General in Boston last year.
Third place went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., followed by the Cleveland Clinic, UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
New York-Presbyterian University Hospital was ranked 7th followed by the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, rounding out the top 10 on the honor roll.
Now in their 24th year, the U.S. News rankings of the nation's best hospitals cover nearly 5,000 medical centers and 16 medical specialties from cancer to neurosurgery.
The top hospital for cancer is the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston while the Cleveland Clinic was rated No. 1 for cardiology and heart surgery.
Hospitals that rank near the top of at least six specialties earn a spot on the honor roll.
