SAN FRANCISCO, July 16 (UPI) -- California's Supreme Court has refused a request from ProtectMarriage, a group that sponsored Proposition 8, that it stop same-sex marriages.
The group had petitioned the high court Friday for an immediate stay that would have forbidden the state from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, Courthouse News Service reported. But the high court issued its ruling Monday denying the request.
Same-sex couples have been marrying in California since June 28, following the U.S. Supreme Court decision throwing out ProtectMarriage's appeal over Proposition 8.
The justices found ProtectMarriage lacked standing to defend the initiative while the group argued that Gov. Jerry Brown did not have the authority to order clerks to issue the licenses, the news service said.
