Poll: More relate to Democrats than GOP on immigration

PRINCETON, N.J., July 15 (UPI) -- Americans are more likely to say their views on immigration align with the Democratic Party than the Republican Party, a Gallup poll released Monday indicated.

However, less than half of those interviewed said they related to either party on the issue, results of the Minority Rights and Relations poll indicated.

Six in 10 Hispanics said they agree more with the Democratic Party on immigration, while 26 percent said they were more in tune with the Republican Party.

Blacks also heavily favor the Democratic Party on immigration policy, with 70 percent saying its policies are closer to their own views on the issue, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said. Fourteen percent name the Republican Party.

Whites are about evenly split in their party preferences on immigration, similar to their overall party affiliation, Gallup said.

High percentages of Republicans and Democrats said they identify with their own party on immigration, while independents are about evenly divided, Gallup said.

Results are based on nationwide phone interviews conducted with 4,373 adults June 13-July 5. The margin of error for the total sample is 2 percentage points.

Results based on a sample of 2,149 non-Hispanic whites have a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
