Ex-Penn State president claims Freeh report libeled him

HARRISBURG, Pa., July 12 (UPI) -- The former president of Penn State University says he will sue Louis Freeh, who led the investigation into the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal, for libel.

Graham Spanier filed notice of intention to sue one day before the one-year anniversary of the day on which Freeh released a report that led to Spanier's firing, NBC News reported Friday.

The report claimed Spanier was one of four powerful people at the university "who failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade," NBC News reported Friday.

Freeh's office declined to comment on the potential lawsuit, noting that felony charges were pending against Spanier.

Those charges include lying to a grand jury, obstruction of justice and endangering the welfare of children.

Spanier has repeatedly professed his innocence in interviews during the last year, The (Harrisburg) Patriot-News reported.

He claims Freeh's characterization of him in the report was negligent. Spanier's filing indicated he plans to seek monetary damages from Freeh and his law firm.
