Woman charged after allegedly leaving daughter's corpse to rot

MANCHESTER, N.J., July 9 (UPI) -- A New Jersey woman has been charged with manslaughter for allegedly leaving her severely handicapped daughter dead in a filthy trailer for weeks.

Janet Wilson, 53, lived in a trailer park in Manchester with her handicapped daughter Rebecca, a son who is also handicapped and her boyfriend. Police said the trailer was filled with trash and the younger Wilson spent most of her time in a hospital bed.

When the younger Wilson died for reasons not yet determined, the rest of the occupants lived with the corpse for weeks before leaving and checking into a motel.

Wilson told no one of her daughter's death, The (Newark) Star-Ledger said. It wasn't until neighbors disturbed by the stench and swarms of insects surrounding the trailer called police who made the grisly discovery May 30. Wilson had been dead for about three weeks, police said.

Police said the trailer was so disgusting they didn't even notice a dog died after being locked in a crate until a second search the following day.

"This is just, to me, a horrible thing. To leave a girl basically to die in a bed while you're out doing whatever the hell you're doing," Manchester Police Chief Brian Klimakowski said. "To me, it's just despicable."

Neighbors described the younger Wilson as "bubbly" though she needed a feeding tube and couldn't walk. They said Wilson enjoyed spending time with friends in the neighborhood and liked to dance though she was confined to a wheelchair.

She was entirely dependent on her mother's care to survive, police said.

When New Jersey police contacted the elder Wilson to inform her of her daughter's death she immediately fled the state. Police tracked her to Reno, Nev., where she was interrogated and charged with manslaughter.

Wilson pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charge in Ocean County Superior Court Monday.
