A hit on husband 'easier than divorcing him,' Michigan woman says

MUSKEGON, Mich., July 9 (UPI) -- A Michigan woman who sought the death of her husband says, in a videotaped meeting with an undercover police officer, a killing would be easier than divorce.

Julia Charlene Merfeld, 20, of Muskegon pleaded guilty in June to soliciting a murder and was to be sentenced July 30.

On videotapes released by prosecutors to WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids, Merfeld is heard telling the police detective, posing as a hit man, a killing would be "easier than divorcing him" and she would not have to worry about "breaking his heart" or the judgment of her family.

She sought the $400,000 available in the life insurance policy of her unidentified husband, 27, and promised to pay $50,000 for the killing, authorities said.
