TOLEDO, Ohio, July 3 (UPI) -- A Toledo, Ohio, woman appeared unharmed Wednesday after being rescued from a sinkhole that swallowed her car as she drove down a city street, authorities said.
Pamela Knox, 60, was taken to a hospital to be checked out after she climbed up a ladder lowered to her car more than 10 feet below the street's surface and was assisted by rescue personnel, The (Toledo) Blade reported.
Toledo police said the incident occurred on North Detroit Avenue shortly after noon. City representative Jen Sorgenfrei said the sinkhole was created when sanitary and storm sewers collapsed, the newspaper said.
A police sergeant said Knox saw a car in front of her start to go into the hole and made it across, but she wasn't so lucky.
"I'm just happy that as I understand, she walked herself out" of the hole, Mayor Mike Bell said. "We had a lot of rain lately and something must have washed out under the road."
City crews using a crane lifted Knox's car out of the hole shortly after 4 p.m.
