Missing family found in Utah canyon, all are OK

PERRY, Utah, July 3 (UPI) -- Police in Perry, Utah, said a family of five, reported missing during an overnight campaign trip, were found Wednesday, all of them in good condition.

Box Elder County Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Berry said Holly Cowcert and her daughter Mandy, 12, and David Cowcert and his two sons, Polo, 13, and Nate, 12, were found in Perry Canyon, one day after a relative reported the family had not arrived as planned to be picked up Tuesday from a camping trip, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

There had been concern the family might have been in danger from a wildfire that broke out in the canyon early Wednesday, as searchers looked for the missing family members -- and part of the speculation was that the lost campers might have started the fire to signal rescuers as to their location -- but authorities said the place where the family members were found was some distance from where the fire started.

The Cowcerts apparently took a detour from their planned hiking route and failed to arrive at a designated pick-up point at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

U.S. Forest Service, Box Elder County and Perry City crews were fighting the fire Wednesday afternoon, the newspaper said, noting it had burned about 1.5 acres.
