KANKAKEE, Ill., July 3 (UPI) -- Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan is a free man after serving five years in prison for racketeering and fraud, officials said Wednesday.
The 79-year-old Ryan had spent the last five months of his sentence under house arrest at his home in Kankakee after serving just over five years at a prison camp in Terre Haute, Ind., the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
As a condition of house arrest, Ryan was not allowed to leave home during non-working hours and was under the supervision of the Bureau of Prisons.
He had been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for offenses that occurred while he was Illinois Secretary of State.
