GRANBURY, Texas, June 28 (UPI) -- A gunman suspected of wounding two law enforcement officers died in a shootout with police Friday in Granbury, Texas, authorities said.
Texas Public Safety Department spokesman Lonny Haschel said in a prepared statement from Granbury police and the Hood County Sheriff that Ricky Don McCommas, 49, of Joshua first shot a sheriff's deputy in the head about 10 miles north of Granbury, The Dallas Morning News reported.
Haschel said deputies called for backup and McCommas, dressed in camouflage clothing, drove a van with windows shot out into the Granbury City Hall parking lot where he opened fire on officers with an assault-style rifle with a large drum-style magazine, wounding one of them, Chad Davis, "in an upper extremity," the statement said.
The statement said the officers returned fire, killing McCommas, the newspaper said.
Davis was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The wounded deputy, whose name had not been released, was hospitalized with life-threatening, officials said.
The Morning News said the shootout occurred about 11 a.m. McCommas had been due to appear in court Friday morning regarding a child sexual assault charge but didn't show up.
The News said the Cleburne Times Review reported last August McCommas was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl.
