Gallup: Half in U.S. back publicly financed federal campaigns

PRINCETON, N.J., June 24 (UPI) -- Half of U.S. adults say they would vote for a law that would establish government funding of federal elections, Gallup said Monday.

Forty-four percent said they would vote against it, results of Gallup's Daily tracking poll indicated.

Results indicated Americans were more likely to support limiting the amount of money congressional candidates can raise and spend for their campaigns. Nearly eight in 10 said they would vote for such a limit while 19 percent said they would oppose it.

Most key subgroups offered tepid support for public campaign finance, including Democrats, and people living in the East and Midwest, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said. The only groups expressing majority opposition are those living in the South and Republicans.

A proposal that would limit campaign spending and contributions saw backing of nearly 80 percent from nearly every major demographic and political group favoring it.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,015 conducted as part of Gallup Daily tracking June 15-16. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
