Clarke was accused of shooting the victims, whose bodies were discovered in a burning car parked on a remote mountain road near Magalia. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Sacramento, the Butte County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement.

KCRA-TV, Sacramento, said two of bodies were found in the trunk. The other was in the back seat. Their identities were still being determined Thursday; however they were believed to be from the Sacramento area.

Deputies did not reveal what led them to Clarke or what his relationship with the victims was.
