CHICAGO, June 17 (UPI) -- A federal court jury in Chicago Monday convicted former Alderman Ambrosio Medrano of conspiracy to commit bribery in a prescription drug scam.
Medrano, 59, who was convicted nearly 20 years ago in Operation Silver Shovel, an FBI investigation into political corruption in Chicago, was found guilty of attempting to bribe what he thought was a public official to win business from the Los Angeles County hospital system.
Also convicted Monday were James Barta, 17, of Fremont, Neb., and Gustavo Buenrostro, 50, of Arlington Heights, Ill.
The three face possible fines of $250,000 and five years in prison.
Evidence indicated Medrano introduced an undercover FBI agent posing as a purchasing agent for the Los Angeles County hospital system to Barta, president of Sav-Rx, and his associate, Buenrostro. Barta gave the agent a $6,500 check to try to gain the prescription drug business, evidence showed.
