Cruz submits voter ID amendment to immigration reform bill

WASHINGTON, June 17 (UPI) -- Hours after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Arizona's voter registration law Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz submitted a voter ID amendment to the immigration bill.

The Texas Republican's measure would amend the National Voter Registration Act to "permit states to require proof of citizenship for registration to vote in elections for federal office," Politico reported.

"Today #SCOTUS ruled federal 'Motor Voter' law preempts AZ proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration," Cruz posted on Twitter. "I'll file amendment to immigration bill that permits states to require ID before registering voters & close this hole in fed statutory law."

He filed the amendment about 2 hours later without any initial co-sponsors, the Washington publication said.
