ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 12 (UPI) -- A woman walking with her husband in an Anchorage, Alaska, park was severely injured by a moose protecting her calf.
The attack occurred late Monday in Kincaid Park, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Holly Spoth-Torres, Anchorage's parks superintendent, said the woman was with her husband on the Mize Loop trail when she accidentally got between the cow moose and the calf.
The woman, whose identity had not been released, was hospitalized with severe injuries to her back, head and neck from the stomping.
Spoth-Torres said signs have been posted in the parks warning hikers and other users of calving season.
Kincaid Park, bounded on the south and west by water and on the north by Ted Stevens International Airport, is more than 1,500 acres of forest and recreational facilities.
"What we need public to know right now is that all of Anchorage is moose and bear country," Spoth-Torres said. "Far North Bicentennial Park and Kincaid are both wild parks, no matter how urban they seem."
