BALTIMORE, June 12 (UPI) -- At least three tornadoes touched down in Maryland and one in Delaware during storms that hit the region, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.
All four tornadoes were rated at 0 on the Fujita scale, with winds of 65-80 mph.
Two of the Maryland tornadoes hit the Baltimore area, one at Locust Point in South Baltimore and the other, the Fork Tornado, in Baltimore County. The third touched down in St. Marys in southern Maryland, where it may have begun as a waterspout on the Potomac River.
Investigators were still trying to determine Tuesday if another tornado touched down in Howard County between Baltimore and Washington in Maryland. Dennis Davison of Woodbine said he and his family heard a roar like a freight train and watched as a funnel cloud approached his property, where it dumped debris and destroyed two classic Ford Mavericks from the 1970s.
The tornado that touched down in the Robscott Manor area in Newark, Del., was part of a damaging system of high winds, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reported. Several houses in the neighborhood suffered structural damage.
"My jaw dropped. I was here last night around 7 o'clock just before it got dark, and it looked like a war zone," Joseph Bryant Jr., public safety director for New Castle County, said Monday.
