Officer: We did not know there was a child in home where girl killed

DETROIT, June 5 (UPI) -- A Detroit police officer testified Wednesday he did not know a child was in the home where a 7-year-old girl was killed during a raid.

Sgt. Courtney Anderson said he and other officers did not see toys outside the house, the Detroit Free Press reported. The toys were visible in a flash photograph taken that night.

Another officer, Joseph Weekley, 37, is charged with the involuntary manslaughter of Aiyana Stanley-Jones on May 16, 2010 and negligent discharge of a firearm. Officers were searching for a homicide suspect who had been seen leaving the two-family house a few hours before.

Sgt. Anthony Potts, who testified after Anderson, said he entered the house after he heard a shot and saw one of his officers holding Aiyana, who had been struck in the head.

On Tuesday, jurors viewed footage recorded during the raid for "The First 48," a true-crime show on the cable network A & E.
