CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 3 (UPI) -- A US Airways flight from Houston made an emergency landing at Charlotte (N.C.) Douglas International Airport with one engine shut down, the airline said.
US Airways spokeswoman Michelle Mohr said the pilots declared an emergency Sunday and landed immediately at the Charlotte airport, the Charlotte Observer reported Monday.
Mohr said she didn't know whether the engine stopped functioning while in flight or shut down by the crew.
Passenger Brian Kalish, 26, of Arlington, Va., one of the 122 passengers aboard Flight 1940 to Charlotte, told the Observer he heard a "horrific noise followed by incredible shaking." He said the noise was loud enough to awaken people sleeping in the cabin.
Soon after, Kalish said he noticed a decrease in the air conditioning system's pressure.
"A few minutes following, the cockpit made an announcement that, as a precaution, we have shut down our No. 1 engine," Kalish said.
Mohr said the plane landed with one engine.
"Pilots are trained to do that," she said, adding that no injuries were reported.
