SACRAMENTO, May 30 (UPI) -- A bill that would require background checks to buy ammunition is among a dozen gun-control measures passed by California legislators.
The Senate bill, which requires anyone wanting to buy ammunition to show identification and pay $50 for a background check, was approved 22-14 Wednesday, with some Democrats joining Republican opponents, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Another Senate bill would outlaw the sale and manufacture of semiautomatic rifles that can accommodate detachable magazines. Anyone owning such a weapon would have to register them with the state.
In the other legislative chamber, the Assembly passed a measure that would require state officials to notify local police when someone buys more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition. The bill would also ban conversion kits that allow magazines to hold more than 10 rounds.
Additionally, anyone who voiced a serious threat of violence to a licensed psychotherapist would be banned from owning a gun.
The bills now go to the companion chambers for approval before they can go to the governor for veto or signing into law.
