DETROIT, May 28 (UPI) -- A judicial administrator has been tapped to oversee Michigan's 36th District Court in Detroit, where financial overruns have thrown the court into crisis.
The Michigan Supreme Court appointed Judge Michael J. Talbot of the Michigan Court of Appeals to oversee the district court, where a recent report suggests a budget shortfall of $4.5 million.
The National Center for State Courts wrote a report on the 36th District Court, calling the situation dire, the Detroit Free Press said.
The agency "concluded that the district court is embroiled in an economic crisis that calls for both immediate and long-term action if the court is to continue functioning," the Michigan Supreme Court said in a news release.
Talbot's appointment was effective immediately and he was holding meetings with staff at the Detroit courthouse Tuesday morning to assess the situation.
