Scores of photos released by defense in Trayvon Martin case

SANFORD, Fla., May 22 (UPI) -- Attorneys defending a Florida man accused of killing unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin have released scores of new photos ahead of their client's trial.

Some of the photographs appear to support the claim of former Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman that Martin's shooting in February 2012 was self-defense, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Photos taken at the Sanford police station the night of the shooting show a cut across the bridge of Zimmerman's nose and several areas of redness on the back and sides of his head.

New paperwork filed by Zimmerman's attorneys said Martin brought marijuana with him to Sanford and used it at least once before he was killed.

Two weeks ago prosecutors filed paperwork asking Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson to ban defense attorneys and witnesses from telling jurors that autopsy blood samples taken from Trayvon tested positive for marijuana use.

Defense attorney Don West wrote that the information is relevant so jurors should know about it.

A hearing is scheduled May 28.
