HOUSTON, May 20 (UPI) -- An off-duty Harris County, Texas, sheriff's deputy allegedly was killed by an intoxicated driver who ran a red light in Houston, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
Sgt. Dwayne Polk, 47, a 16-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, was in uniform and driving his privately owned pickup truck early Sunday morning when its driver's side door was struck by a truck driven by Andres Munos-Munos, 22, Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon said.
Polk died at the scene, the Houston Chronicle reported.
"The HCSO family is in mourning," Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christina Garza said.
Cannon said Munos' statements, and evidence from the scene, indicated he was intoxicated, and that he was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Munos, a resident of Houston but not a U.S. citizen, was charged with intoxicated manslaughter, Harris County court records show.
